FAQ
AI in finance careers: common questions
- Will AI replace investment banking analysts?
- Not as a job title, but it is taking the first draft of the analyst's work: the comps pull, the first pass of a model, the meeting notes. What stays is the judgement: checking the draft, explaining it to a client and knowing when it is wrong. That is where hiring and interviews are moving. What AI skills employers now expect.
- Which AI tools should a finance candidate know?
- The ones a junior actually opens: Copilot inside Excel, AlphaSense for research, the AI features in the Bloomberg Terminal, and the bank's own licensed version of ChatGPT or Claude. Knowing what each does, and what it gets wrong, is worth more in an interview than a list of names on a CV. The tools, one by one.
- What is an AI job in finance?
- Mostly an engineering or data seat with a finance client: AI and machine learning engineers at hedge funds, data scientists at asset managers, forward deployed engineers (most sent in by vendors, a few now hired by the banks directly), and a growing set of AI product and governance roles inside the banks themselves. The AI roles, by title.
- What have the big banks actually built with AI?
- In-house assistants built on licensed models rather than the public apps: JPMorgan's LLM Suite, Goldman Sachs's GS AI Assistant, Morgan Stanley's assistant for its advisers. Staff work inside the bank's own tool, and a candidate who knows the difference sounds like someone who has already worked there. What each bank shipped.
- How do private equity firms use AI?
- Across the deal: to find companies earlier, as EQT's Motherbrain does; to get through a data room faster in due diligence; and inside portfolio companies, where firms like Apollo and Vista run teams that push AI into the businesses they own. An associate is expected to use these tools, not build them. AI across a private equity deal.
